What Happened to Halloween?

Ok - I know it's another commercialized holiday. Another holiday to increase sales at stores. As an adult, I'm well aware of that. I'm also aware of the fact that Halloween is steeped in history. It isn't something that some candy company guru sat down and made up to boost sales so he could get himself a mansion and a trophy wife. It's part of our past.

Halloween is my favorite holiday, other than Christmas. I love the kids, the costumes, the decorations - all of it. As a kid I can remember having to come home and empty the pillowcase that I used to get goodies. All the homemade things were safe then. Candy Apples, Popcorn Balls, cookies, fudge. Living on an Air Force base was great - we raked it in. And I'd get all my sister's gum because she had braces and couldn't chew it. We had a blast. Mom and Dad would get dressed up to give out candy. Jack o' lanterns glowing, spooky music playing, haunted houses......cool.

Now people are afraid to let their children go. The world has become so evil that it isn't safe. My parents don't even bother getting candy any more. No one comes to the house. The streets are dark.

Where I live, Halloween is celebrated on the Saturday before the 31st. During the day, from 1-4 pm. Great for me - I get to see all the kids in daylight. And we get a ton. Normally we get 250-300 kids. They come from all the surrounding small towns to ours. They start at the fire hall, and the fire whistle blows at 1pm. We live a block away, right on main street. We get slammed with kids. All at once. Lined up on the sidewalk, past the gate...three kids deep as I try to hand out candy to each one. Babies in bug costumes, dogs and daddies decked out in Halloween garb....... It's hectic and chaotic and I love every minute of it. Although this year I'm gonna freeze my butt off. And somewhere, deep inside of me, the kid that used to be is watching Halloween slowly die. What a world we live in.

Halloween is gone. We used to go, and trick or treat on the way home from school. Then we would meet up with our friends, and stay out till 10PM, from the age of 8. Now we take our son, along with my brothers and sisters, and their kids, and trick or treat for an hour or two. Granted the oldest is 7, but my sister would go out with us, the oldest being 10, and she was 6. Halloween is dead.

I totally agree Kelly!! I remember going trick or treating as a kid, by the time I was 7 or 8 our parents didn't even go with us because it was SAFE!! Now though, I don't even take my kids to that neighborhood anymore, not safe, AND I LIVE IN IDAHO!! We have something called Trunk or treat where you go to cars in a parking lot with people you KNOW are safe. I am seriously considering doing that this year. It is just too hard as a single mom to safely take 3 little kids out at night

My wife and I moved to a small town in Arizona which celebrates Halloween on Halloween day at night no less. I think it still exists in rural America especially since in small towns everyone knows everyone else. Walmart isn't helping though by setting up the Christmas decorations 3 weeks before Halloween.
