Water Lily Experiment

This is a test. I picked up a Water Lily (pond plant) from a garden center. I washed the mud off and trimmed the roots. The plant was getting ready to go dormant for the winter. The Rhizome is about 1 inch or so in diameter, and about 4 inches long. I then broke off the parts with plants growing. Planted the three plants. And buried the rest of the rhizome in the gravel. We will see what happens with both the plants and the rhizome. By the way, this is in my 130, which I am going for the pond/planted look.

Pictures taken in same order. Here are the three plants today. No new plants starting on the rhizome yet.

Looking great! Showing lots of new growth and good color! Not to mention they are getting big.

Updated full tank shot...For size comparison, the 2 larger fish, just to right of center are 5 inches long.

Time for another installment of How the water lily grows!

All are showing great growth. Adding some new leaves. But still no new growth on the rhizome.

This one is so big, I have to take two shots to show the new growth in back.

#2

#3 This one is still small, but getting new leaves in the center and front edge.

These last two shots show the size of #1...

Not bad at all for 1 months growth!!

#3 (Not doing as well as the others, but hey, I got two nice plants out of the deal!)

MAJOR DISASTER!!

Yesterday, (12/16/08), The shubbies went on a rampage! For the first time since I got this plant, THEY ATTACKED! They didn't touch anything else in the tank. Only this one.
All I could do was stand there with my chin on the floor, and watch as 5 Shubunkin Goldfish had a field day with this plant. They did not eat ANY of it! They merely shredded the leaves off, and let the shredded pieces float in the water!

Here's what it looks like after they finished. Since there is a rhizome in the gravel, I am hoping it will come back out. If it does, are they going to leave it alone? Are they going to shred it as it comes out? Is it going to get this big again? We will have to wait and see what the answers will be.

I wonder what caused them to do that. I have never had a gold fish do anything like that. strange. Betty

I used to have a water lilies in my tank. They grew like crazy and bloomed several times. Since it started growing so much i decided to put it into an outside pond.
