Hello,
I'm a beginner in the aquarium world and I'm looking to start a tank with South American Cichlids. I wondering if it's okay to populate the tank with various S.A. Cichlids or are there restrictions? Also what is the best substrate for the S.A. Cichlids?

Is there any other species that are compatible with the S.A. Cichlids?

Thank You,
JD

some SA  cichlids  combine well with others  but still others  do not...    Tough question to answer...  smaller  sa cichlids  like apistogramma  and  mikrogeophagus  are great community  fish  while  others  likeseverums and  pike cichlids  are not...

honestly  the best  substrate  I have used  with SA  cichlids  is a product  called Baylee's Better Bottom... it  is  perfect size  for  geophagus  to chew and a good color  to set  of  some  of the striking  but in ways  subtle  colors of many SA...
For more info  on  SA cichlids look  here:

http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/
choose  group " South America"  then  look at the subgroups available.. when you choose a subgroup  an new window  will open  that lists  most of the species  in that group  that  may be available...  it will take  you a long while(  as much as a week) to go through it all  but  may really help  with decisions..

Just my 2 cents (I can't find the cents sign), the guides to what can and can't go together, are recommendations. The fish's personality has more to do with it, as long as you don't get breeding pairs. Then the aggression level gets to be to much. And if you get all your fish small, they will be a lot more likely to get along.

Tank size determines all.  It's impossible to get others opinions on stocking without knowing more.
